Position Title: Athletic Assistant Coach
Reports To: The Head Coach, in conjunction with the Athletic Director and Respective Principal
FLSA Status: Exempt
Length of Contract: Contract Length varies by position. Salary and work year to be established by the Board of Education.
SUMMARY:
The Athletic Head Coach Assistant is responsible for carrying out the aims and objectives of the sport program as outlined by the Head Coach. His/her responsibility is to instruct scholar athletes in individual and team fundamentals, strategy, and physical training necessary for them to realize a degree of individual and team success. The Athletic Head Coach Assistant will urge the student body to be polite, courteous, and fair to the opposing team; display good sportsmanship; maintain poise and self-control; teach the team to play fair and intense without sacrificing his/her values for a win; be a good host to the visiting team and officials (meet them and show them to the dressing room, etc.); and be demanding, firm, and fair.
ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS:
The Athletic Head Coach Assistant will be evaluated by the Head Coach, in conjunction with the Athletic Director and respective Principal using local district policies and Arkansas Department of Education guidelines.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Other duties may be assigned.
- Meet all South Conway County School District licensed instructional staff job description criteria.
- Has a thorough knowledge of all the Athletic Policies approved by the South Conway County Board of Education and is responsible for its implementation.
- Has knowledge of existing system, state (AAA and Arkansas Department of Education), and league regulations, implements same consistently and interprets them for staff.
- Understands the proper administrative line of command and refers all student and parent requests or grievances through proper channels.
- Is aware of and attends all required public/staff/departmental meetings.
- Maintains discipline and works to increase morale and cooperation within the school sports program.
- Assists the Head Coach in scheduling, providing transportation to tournaments, and special sport events.
- Assists in the necessary preparation to hold scheduled sports events or practices and adheres to scheduled facility times. Coordinates program with maintenance and school employees.
- Provides documentation to the Athletic Director to fulfill state and system requirements concerning physical examinations, parental consent, and eligibility.
- Provides proper safeguards for maintenance and protection of assigned equipment sites.
- Provides training rules and other regulations of the sport to each athlete who is considered a participant.
- By his/her presence at all practices, games, and while traveling, provides assistance and guidance to and safeguards for each participant.
- Directs student managers and statisticians on respective teams.
- Determines discipline, delineates procedures concerning due process when the enforcement of discipline is necessary. Contacts parents when a student is dropped or becomes ineligible.
- Is accountable to the Head Coach for all equipment. Collects the cost of any equipment lost or not returned. Arranges for issuing and storing of equipment and submits to the Head Coach an annual inventory and current records concerning same.
- Recommends to the Head Coach budgetary items for next year in his/her area of the program.
- Monitors equipment rooms and coaches’ offices and authorizes who may enter.
- Permits the athletes to only be in authorized areas of the building at the appropriate times.
- Examines locker rooms before and after practices and games, checking on general cleanliness of the facility. Responsible for cleanliness and maintenance of specific sport equipment.
- Secures all doors, lights, windows, and locks before leaving building if custodians are not on duty.
- Instills in each player a respect for equipment and school property, its care and proper use.
- Assists the Head Coach in carrying out his/her responsibilities.
- Makes press releases and school announcements.
- Instructs team members as to changes in the rules and teaches fundamentals of the sport as outlined by the Head Coach.
- Maintains a record of team statistics for both Head Coach and Athletic Director.
- Works within the basic framework and philosophy of the Head Coach of that sport.
- Attends all staff meetings and carries out scouting assignments as outlined by the Head Coach.
- Arrives early enough before practice, contests, and meetings to adequately prepare and remains long enough afterwards to help players with problems or to become involved in staff discussions.
- Helps in the planning and implementation of both in-season and out-of-season conditioning and weight programs.
- Never criticizes, admonishes, or argues with Head Coach or any staff member within ears or eyes of players or parents.
- Strives to improve skills by attending clinics and using resources made available by the Head Coach.
- Attends most of the contests, when possible, of other teams in the program.
- Performs such other duties that are consistent with the nature of the position and that may be requested by the Head Coach.
EDUCATION, CERTIFICATIONS, AND EXPERIENCE:
Valid Arkansas teacher certification; Coaching endorsement/NFHS Coaching Verification Forms with Valid Teacher License; Certification in subject area excluding Health/Physical education; Employed as a teacher or substitute teacher in the South Conway County School District; Previous coaching experience in assigned sport is desirable; Valid CDL License Required; Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board and Superintendent may find appropriate and acceptable.

The position requires the individual to sometimes work irregular or extended work hours in order to meet multiple demands from several people.
